The Major Event(s)

The Civil War coincides with the general end of the Transcendentalist movement, though Emerson and Thoreau were very involved in the Abolitionist movement. This would ultimately take their time away from "escaping" the world and writing about and being one with nature, as they would become involved in publishing abolitionist literature, aiding in the movement of the Underground Railroad, and working with John Brown to emancipate southern slaves.
With the end of the Civil War, the beginning of the end of legal slavery, and the beginning of the mechanization and exponential economic and social growth of America, the Transcendentalist movement came to a close, though what it taught would still hold true over a century later.
